Commissioned by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the William Penn Foundation, TDC studied the financial health and capitalization challenges of 158 arts and culture organizations in greater Philadelphia. The study found that when it comes to capitalization, strong financial literacy does not translate into robust financial health, and delves into TDC’s latest thinking on the practice changes at individual organizations and within the system as a whole that could bridge this disconnect.

After watching the use of debt skyrocket over the course of a decade, TDC conducted an in-depth study on how debt was deployed by and how it impacted organizations across three different disciplines: arts organizations, human service providers and private schools.

The National Capitalization Project, initiated by Grantmakers in the Arts and facilitated by TDC, brought together regional and national funders to share ideas about how funders can respond to capitalization challenges in the nonprofit sector. TDC prepared a literature review about capitalization and summarized the outcomes of the initiative.
